Carlton and Primrose dunes update

Thursday, 13 November 2025

I realise it's been a while since any news went out about this.

For those just arriving, here's the back-story:

Some "helpful" General Aviation pilot spotted a PG flying and reported it to Hobart Tower as he realised they were flying inside airspace. Hobart Tower weren't impressed so we said we would police it better. A couple of us have spent days (probably at least 10 now) on an application to CASA to get an exemption like we have at Single.

The previous tower manager was just about to move on elsewhere as we were doing our application so he wouldn’t sign off on approval from Air Service (required for the application). The new tower manager was swamped at first with handover tasks but then just avoided it for 9 months and has now also resigned so it seems nothing will happen for a while. CASA have basically pre-approved everything, they are just waiting on a simple letter from Air Services, but it has been a year and they still haven’t produced one, even though it’s just a duplicate of the letter we have for Single Hill. I’m tearing my hair out!!

Everybody is frustrated that we can’t fly, but we are all avoiding it so that we don’t stick our heads out of the trench just as we are trying to prove that we are responsible users and should be worthy of an exemption.

So the update?
The short story is that there was a good reason for stopping flying and we are working hard on trying to get it back, but legally and legitimately this time. I doubt anything will happen in the next few months. We are hoping the next Tower Manager is more helpful.

Unitl then flying at Carlton and Primrose dunes is still illegal and probably not a good look for us if someone is caught again...
